WHY IS JESUS’ RESURRECTION SO CONVINCING?
STUDY 5: PAGE 17
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CONDUCT SOCIETY without a judicial system that requires proof to convict the guilty and acquit the innocent. Some of the evidence presented in a law court may be scientific, but much of it depends on witnesses who saw the accused commit the crime.
It is the responsibility of the jury to weigh the evidence and decide whether the witnesses are telling the truth or not. The more witnesses there are, the more convincing is the case for the defence or prosecution. It is actually very difficult to get two or three witnesses to agree in every detail when carefully questioned. This is why Jewish law required the agreement of two or three witnesses to convict someone of an offence.
There are many witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus, far more than is really necessary to convince a reasonable person that the resurrection actually happened.
SUMMARY: The whole of Christianity is based on God’s marvellous workings in history. In addition to all the wonderful miraculous signs of Jesus, the greatest sign of all is the resurrection of Jesus Himself.
Three days after His death, Jesus was raised to life again and seen by His disciples over a period of forty days. Indeed, Jesus was seen by more than 500 people at the same time. Taking all the witnesses and their testimony, it is impossible to conclude that they are telling lies. These were not cleverly invented stories as we shall see from the following pages.
