Coping With Depression
“I hated life … for all is vanity and grasping for the wind” Ecclesiastes 2:17.
“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” John 10:10
Wise king Solomon wrote the first quotation above. He knew that whatever one achieves in life is taken away at death. And a lifetime’s savings passed to another may be badly misspent. Even wisdom gained from bitter experience dies with you, for the next generation repeats the same mistakes and suffers accordingly.
This is true but it is not the whole truth, and can leave us thoroughly depressed and even suicidal. We may have tried it all but nothing satisfies; nothing seems worth doing; life seems pointless.
Why do I feel so empty and depressed?
God put us in this world for a reason. It is not to please ourselves but to please Him. We are made by God and for God.
Man is creative and makes things for the benefit of himself. God made all things for Himself, and God made man in His own likeness to have fellowship with Himself. When we look for happiness and satisfaction without God we will never find it. By seeking happiness and not God, we miss the solution to our problem.
What is the reason for life’s emptiness?
From what has been said, you can see that there is a very real purpose for living. But we can only get that sense of purpose when we give up living for ourselves and start living for God who made us. We must admit our sinful failure and confess it to God. We must ask forgiveness in the death of Christ. Once reconciled to God we will daily know His fatherly love, and experience the abundant life that Jesus speaks about above.
What comfort is there for a person like me?
