QUESTION PAGE 2
Explain: “Why do you say that Jesus directed people to Himself”
Jesus is very different to the prophets and other great men of God in the Bible. They never claimed to be the way to God like Jesus did. They could never solve the problem of man’s sin but Jesus could. When He invited people to come to Him, He was asking them to recognise that He was the solution to the sin that separated them from God. He would provide this solution by suffering on the cross in the place of those who believed on Him and turned from their sinful way of life. We are all sinners and need to turn away from those things that displease God.
QUESTION PAGE 3
Explain: “Why do you say that His miracles are recorded for our sake so that we too should have no excuse.”
Forgiveness depends on faith in Christ. Faith is trusting and believing even though we cannot see any proof. Jesus did miraculous signs as proof of who He was. But to give signs as proof is not God’s usual way. Faith without proof is God’s usual way. The fact that they had proof meant that they now had plenty of reason to believe on Jesus they would have no excuse on Judgement Day for not believing!
The miracles of Jesus are recorded for us to read today. These documents are true accounts of Jesus’ miracles. They are therefore “written proof” of who Jesus is. So we too shall have no excuse on Judgement Day if we refuse to recognise that Jesus is God’s Son and not just an ordinary man or prophet.
QUESTIONS PAGE 4
Explain: “Tell me more about the statement ‘Who can forgive sins but God alone?’”
When we sin against other people we are also sinning against God. God made man perfect and expects him to live in perfect harmony with others. Every time we act unkindly by saying and doing things that hurt other people we are disobeying God, for God commands us to love one another.
Only the person who has been sinned against can forgive. So even when others forgive the hurt we do them we still need God to forgive us for we have also sinned against Him. Jesus was forgiving a lifetime of sin against God. He could only do that if He was God!
Explain: “Why does the Virgin Birth and term Son of God imply that Jesus is God?”
The Virgin Birth is so VERY unusual that it must suggest that there is something very different about Jesus. Since God gave conception to Mary, Jesus can be called God’s Son. But Jesus was ALSO God’s Son from eternity past, so that when Jesus called God His Father He was indeed claiming equality with God (John 5:18 - see Study 1). Sons are like their fathers, but not in every way. Jesus was, however, exactly like God His Father (Hebrews 1:3). This likeness is so complete that Jesus could say “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
OTHER QUESTIONS
Explain: “How is it that some people thought Jesus was deceiving the people?”
Jesus drew great crowds and this made the religious leaders jealous, so they falsely accused Him of many things. For instance, they accused Him of wanting to destroy the Temple and of teaching the people to disobey the laws that God gave to Moses.
Explain: “Why is it that in John 8:54 Jesus and God appear to be different persons? When we say ‘Jesus is Lord’, are we saying that He is God? Do God and Lord have the same meaning?
There are many verses in the New Testament where Jesus is seen to be a different person to God the Father. There are also many verses that show that Jesus is God (i.e. God the Son). Since there is only one God, an explanation that agrees with all that God teaches us in the Bible is necessary. This explanation is usually called the Trinity. It states that there is one God in three persons—God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.God and Lord often have the same meaning—see Acts 17:24. So references to Jesus as Lord can certainly imply that He is God.
