“FINDING OUT ABOUT CHRIST”

FO~TAMStd4p14.gif

IN OUR PREVIOUS STUDY we saw just how holy and pure Jesus was. His sinlessness makes Him the perfect substitute for sinners. Having no sin of His own, Jesus was able to take to Himself the sins of others and die for them. When we are aware of the sinfulness of our own hearts, we know that no ordinary man could have lived the perfect life that Jesus did. There is nothing ordinary about Jesus. As we have already seen, the New Testament declares Jesus to be both God and man.

Because Jesus is both God and man it is impossible to measure the worth of His death for sinners. He is more than the perfect man, He is the God-man. The divine aspect gives infinite value to the death of Jesus. No matter how great or how many our sins, Christ’s death is sufficient to cleanse them. And not only cleanse our sins, but also cleanse the sins of all, in every generation, who believe on Him and truly repent.

If Jesus Christ was punished instead of believers, they need not fear any future punishment. Now that their Passover Lamb has died for them, the judgement of God will pass them bye.

SUMMARY: Great good came out of the dreadful sin of murdering Jesus. Man had one purpose in mind but God had an entirely different one. At the cross, God laid on Christ the sin of others, and then punished Him in their place. Christ was the believing sinner’s substitute; God’s curse fell on the just and holy Jesus so that He died instead of them.

The willingness of God to accept a substitute was well known. For centuries the Jewish people had sacrificed lambs and other animals as sin offerings. The innocent lamb was made to suffer for man’s sin.

The lamb, however, was never an adequate substitute for man, nor was it intended to be. It was simply God’s way of showing what His Son would willingly do. Jesus would be God’s Lamb that would take away the sin of those who would repent and believe.
